2021 Toyota Tundra vs 2021 Ford F-150 near Pittsburgh PA

Vehicle Overview

The Taylor Auto Group is your local Toyota dealership serving Pittsburgh Youngstown Akron and the surrounding areas, and we are thrilled to announce the arrival of the 2021 Toyota Tundra. The Tundra offers standard V8 power, a spacious rear seat, true off-road configurations and an unparalleled suite of driver assistance technologies. New for this model are a couple of special editions: Nightshade and Trail. A top competitor to the Tundra is the 2021 Ford F-150, which is among the best-selling pickups. But we think the Tundra outperforms the F-150 in a number of key areas and aim to prove by demonstrating how these two vehicles measure up through a 2021 Toyota Tundra vs 2021 Ford F-150 comparison.

Pittsburgh PA - 2021 Toyota Tundra's Overview

Exterior – 2021 Toyota Tundra

The 2021 Toyota Tundra is a full-size pickup truck that is available from your local Toyota dealer serving Pittsburgh Youngstown Akron in five core trim levels: SR, SR5, Limited, TRD Pro and Platinum. There is also the 1794 Edition, which is based on the Platinum but is Western-themed and commemorates the Texas ranch where the Tundra is now built. Toyota offers two cabs: a four-door double cab with smaller rear doors and a four-door crew cab—called the CrewMax—with full size doors. Three bed lengths are available—5.5, 6.5 and 8.1 feet—and all three can be had with both cab configurations. The 2021 Ford F-150 is available in six core trims: XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum and Limited. Ford offers three cabs: a SuperCab, which is comparable to the Tundra double; a SuperCrew, which is comparable to the CrewMax; and a regular cab, which is the classic single bench pickup style. Ford also offers three box lengths, and these are very similar to the Tundra at 5.5, 6.5 and 8 feet. The Tundra long bed is about 1.2 inches longer, which may not seem like much but can make a difference in practice.

The Ford single cab can seat up to three. All other Tundra and Ford cabs can seat up to six. In all cases, the front row is similar in that you are afforded about 40 inches of headroom and about 43 inches of legroom. If you are considering a double cab, we believe the Tundra is the more compelling option because it provides more than an inch of additional rear legroom and every bit counts with the smaller extended cabs. With the crew cabs, Ford offers the additional inch, but we are at about 43 inches at this point and do not believe that inch is as big a factor as with the double due to the overall spaciousness.

Mechanical – Tundra specs near Pittsburgh

The Toyota approach to the Tundra is to determine the best possible engine for the vehicle and then to refine that powertrain as much as possible. Under the hood of every 2021 Toyota Tundra is a 5.7L V8 that makes 381 horsepower and 401 pound-feet of torque. Toyota pairs this engine with a six-speed automatic transmission, which can be had with either rear-wheel or front-wheel drive. Trailering equipment is included standard and allows you Tundra to tow more than 10,000 pounds. Ford takes a different approach with the 2021 Ford F-150. It offers a half dozen distinct powertrains. Let us focus on those that matter most to this comparison. The base engine is a 3.3L V6 that makes 290 hp and 265 lb.-ft. The base Tundra is the big winner here with its standard V8. Ford also makes you add trailering equipment as an option, and with that proper equipment, you can tow about 7,700 pounds. You can opt for a 5.0L V8 that puts the F-150 more in line with the Tundra in terms of horsepower, torque, payload capacity and towing capacity, but be sure to note the price difference.

Technology – Toyota Tundra near Pittsburgh PA

The Tundra is unmatched in the segment when it comes to tech because Toyota includes Toyota Safety Sense as standard equipment. Even in the base model, TSS adds a collision avoidance system with pedestrian detection, dynamic radar-based cruise control, a lane departure mitigation system and automatic headlamps and high beams. Some of this equipment is not even available with the F-150.
